Early childhood math is based on base 10 system. When a child understands place value, we say they have number sense. The Abacus is visual and concrete expression of base ten foundations. The beads represent one. A rod holds ten. Each abacus has 10 rods and 100 beads. Repeated use when calculating addition and subtraction with the abacus builds a concrete picture in the brain. Moving the beads increases kinesthetic expression. Abacus, Dice, Mancala, Quizmo! Let's play. Repeated practice through games and play make math the best part of the day. Having these concrete materials in each student's hands make it possible for kids to learn in the most productive way. The kids have so much fun playing. The math comes disguised in the play. Tons of learning and they don't even know it.
