Our district has decided to transition into 90 minute block scheduling next year. I teach 7th and 8th grade science and as a 5'5" female, majority of the boys in my classes are as tall or taller than me! The stools in my classroom are extremely uncomfortable and I have students complain daily about the lack of comfort they have to endure for just 45 minutes. I can't imagine how miserable they will be next year when their time spent sitting on those stools is doubled! Our school was built in the 1960s and the last time the science department received updated furniture was over 20 years ago. I try to provide my students the opportunity to move around multiple times during the class period because I know at ages 13-15 they are restless and full of energy. Having a more comfortable seating option would greatly increase their retention span as they would not be so focused on their discomfort and could instead focus more on their learning.
