Roald Dahl's classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been used in classrooms for years to explore important themes such as kindness, poverty, family, and ingenuity. We will read this novel in Spanish and build comprehension of the story and themes through several STEAM projects along the way including a candy melting lab (Properties of matter-Science), sketching Mr. Wonka's Factory (Area and Perimeter-Math), and exploring connections to Multiplication and Division with candy production contextual problems.
This project is primarily to fund the purchase of the novel and materials needed for the final culminating project, "3D Pen Designed Automata." In groups of 5 to 6, students will select one of the themes depicted in book and create a theater box Automaton of the characters or scene representing the theme. While students will use the 3D pens to create characters or objects, the actual Automata will be created with recycled/up-cycled materials such as cardboard and paper scraps.
This project will be embedded in various levels of STEAM concepts connecting Reading to Visual arts to Engineering and Design. Upon completion parents will be invited to see the final projects and hear their students present on the novel and process of Automata creation.
