During first grade lessons, students don't typically stay at their desks. We gather at the meeting area, sitting close like a family. This allows me to easily scan for who is engaged, who is distracted, and who is confused. My school has chosen to replace the traditional meeting area rug with seating mats, which often become a distraction for my squirmier students, and can become a safety hazard if one is left in our meeting area. This seating rug's colors will brighten up our whole classroom and welcome my first graders to the meeting area; additionally, with its kid-sized squares, they can learn to give their peers personal space throughout our lessons.
