In fifth grade Social Studies, I begin the year with theories of how early humans came into the Americas. I love to introduce them to their early lifestyle with a discussion of the vocabulary word “technology”. Students are quick to raise their hands with examples like smart phones, laptops, and virtual assistants, because these are the technologies they all have grown to use in their every day life. It amazes them when I explain that these early Americans had their own technology thousands of years ago. It expands their understanding of technology to the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Students see an old, dusty text book and can not relate to the idea of early civilizations and their forms of technology. So, I am attempting to bridge the gap between our modern technology, which the students are comfortable with, and early civilizations. We will use these Chromebooks to guide discussions in Google Classroom, examine regional differences with Google Earth, and most importantly examine artifacts and archaeological sites virtually. If students are able to manipulate and examine real artifacts it encourages critical thinking about the significance of these artifacts. I want students to see the value of history and that their own technology will even be history one day. We won’t stop there! These Chromebooks also prepare the students for end of year standardized tests. Fifth grade is the first-time students will be taking a computer-based test. We teach them typing and computer skills to not only comfortably take their tests, but to prepare them for further education. Many jobs and lifestyles heavily rely on computer skills and these are their first steps. Please help me equip my students with some of the easiest forms of technology they can use on a daily basis.
