In my class of 32 students, I have students who are not able to regulate their emotions, students who do not know how to respond appropriately in certain situations, and students who come to school full of stress, anxiety and worry from what is happening at home and in the world around them. Those same students have meltdowns in the classroom or they "shut down" because they are overly stimulated, or because they are unable to control their behavior, or because they cannot "turn off" their thoughts, which affects their ability to be successful academically. I have found in doing my own research that most of the time, those students just need a quiet space to calm down and re-group. I'd like to create a quiet space for students to go to when they need to calm down and self-regulate. I chose items to create a self-regulation resource basket to be used in that quiet space. I would include squish balls & noodles, scented markers, rubiks cubes, noise cancelling headphones, sand timers, mindfulness task cards, glass bubblers, and kinetic sand. I also chose items (eye masks, cushions, wooden chime) for when we do whole class self-regulation activities that can also be used in the quiet space.
