Research proves that children who are given the opportunity to move are better focused and are able to absorb more information. Six and seven year olds move, so why not let them move?! Why do children need to sit at a desk for 2 hours straight, not talking or moving and expect to retain information? Sometimes, especially for the children that need the extra movement, five extra minutes of jumping on the trampoline before word study, is what's needed to get their brains focused on the task at hand. Our schedule in particular leaves us with the whole afternoon in the classroom doing Language Arts and Science and Social Studies with no breaks. My students need something to get them refocused. They are tired, wiggly, and off-task around 12:30 when it's fluency time and this is one of the most important times of our day! After going to a training in our district and teachers using the chair balls, stools, and the surfs during the class, and hearing how much they have helped three classrooms in our district, I was so excited and inspired to fight to have these resources for my students. I know how much these resources could help my students because I know how much energy they have, but also how much potential they have. If they could release some of this energy, they could focus on being the best they can be!
