Many students are wary of science, but for good reasons! The vocabulary is daunting, the concepts complex, and pacing fast. However, as students get involved in hands-on laboratory experiences, they connect to the material! For the past 3 years, I have tried my best to provide my students with as many lab experiences as possible despite working in a former elementary school classroom with very limited lab equipment. This refrigerator and supplies for conducting several bacteria-related labs will help my students draw connections from everyday experiences like washing their hands or using antibacterial products to principles of evolution and microbiology. As they test the effectiveness of different antibiotics, they will be able to learn about the dangers of MRSA and other antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. They can learn about the evolution of these remarkable adaptations through simple mutations. The refrigerator and additional supplies will allow me to culture bacteria and store it for use in future classes for years to come. Not only will this project help me teach my students about bacteria and evolution, but the refrigerator will provide storage for materials that can be used in a wide variety of lab experiences that have previously been out of reach. The cold storage of several chemicals and other supplies will allow my students to more efficiently extract their own DNA, analyze the medicinal properties of plants, and design experiments to test the impacts of environmental conditions on seed germination among many others.
