Second grade is a critical year in developing and solidifying reading skills. Some of my students are significantly below grade level. These struggling readers are often reluctant to write letters/words. By using manipulatives such as magnetic letters, dry erase boards and games; students will be more engaged in learning how to decode words and read. This engagement will lead to increased retention and enjoyment as they build the necessary reading skills. The magnetic letters and boards will be used for small group activities as we learn to build words during intensive reading interventions. Additionally, the games will provide a fun interactive activity as students rotate through groups and grow in their reading skills. Many of my students do not have books at home. Because reading needs to be practiced at school and home, I’d like to provide my students with nightly readers that allow them to practice reading with with families. Additionally, taking books home and returning them allows students to show responsibility to our classroom community by taking care of school property that other students will need to use.
