We have labs each year with fruit flies and with Planaria that use dissection microscopes to aid in visualizing the specimens and have limited scopes to use. The lab with fruit flies requires magnification so the students can sex the flies and use the genetics they have learned to plan on crossing mutations to breed in the offspring. The lab with Planaria uses the microscope magnification to follow the regrowth of different types of cuts on the Planaria and allows students to make informed observations for data of regrowth from stem cells and or autosomal body cells. Plastic Pipettes and Magnification that is less than a regular microscope is needed for this lab. Currently, we have to share scope within several lab groups and it has been my goal to have enough dissection microscopes and pipettes for each lab group so precious class time in the labs is not spent waiting turns.
