Most of my students don't hear much English at home. Many students don't have time or access to libraries. My school does not have a library; however, it has just started a D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) program for 20 minutes every morning. This is time when students can discover new books, authors, and genres. When they find the books they love, they're hooked, and want more. Not all students are hooked, though. In fact, most students just stare at a single page during D.E.A.R. because they don't like the book, can't decode the words, or don't know there are millions of other books to choose from. My kids are interested in science fiction, realistic fiction, graphic novels, urban legends, and mysteries. Most students don't know their interests, however, so they stare at the page, waiting out the D.E.A.R. clock, and wasting time when they could be developing a life long passion for learning and reading.
