Cross-curriculum is extremely important to me and to my school as a whole. I would love for my students to be able to engage in reading in the health classroom. My students' health is extremely important to me - so I want to be able to catch their interest in any way possible.
"The Goldfish Boy" and the Scholastic magazine "Choices" are both proven to catch the attention of teenagers.
I would like to purchase a classroom set of "The Goldfish Boy" as well as a year's subscription to Scholastic's "Choices".
Multiple student-written reviews have been published raving about how much students love to read both of these titles.
"The Goldfish Boy" is a teen crime-fiction book about a boy that has obsessive-compulsive disorder. His OCD is so severe that he has trouble leaving his bedroom. This boy ends up witnessing a kidnapping of a smaller child & is forced to take control of his disorder in order to save the younger child. This book is a great way to introduce mental illness to middle schoolers.
"Choices" is a Scholastic teen health magazine. This magazine is full of health topics that teens find interesting. There are articles on mental illnesses, personal health, personal failure, life skills, etc. There are a limited amount of resources when it comes to current events regarding teen health. "Choices" really hits that nail on the head and would be an AMAZING addition to our classroom!
