At ABHS, students engage in a variety of texts centered around unique and diverse perspectives. In the 10th grade Humanities, we read novels like Animal Farm and The Handmaid's Tale. In Civics, students read Justice and Our Declaration. We engage in the text through Lit Circles that are facilitated by community volunteers. Here, students discuss these thematically rich texts and grapple with making sense of the text and sharing their thoughts, opinions, and interpretations. Because these texts are often high level, many of our students need tools to help them with comprehending the works. We use audiobooks and other guides to help them. However, with Kindles that students could rent out, we would be able to offer them even more help. Text-to-speech tools, vocabulary glossaries, and other apps/skills would help students work on their reading comprehension skills.
