Students will be able to read books that are about people like them. The characters and/or authors look like them. Too often people of color do not see themselves in mainstream culture. This will help change that! Having books that tell their story will be more relatable and enjoyable for students, building engagement and desire to read. Books focus on sharing the stories of immigrants, the black community, and finding identity as someone a part of the LGTBQIA community. My students are underrepresented in mainstream media, and having books like The Hate U Give, I am Not your Perfect American Daughter, and Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda will promote their own identity.
