Research studies show a multi-sensory approach in the early grades improves phonemic awareness, phonics, and reading comprehension skills. Multi-sensory instruction combines listening, speaking, reading, and a tactile activity. Manipulatives like the resources for this project increase students’ acquisition of phonics skills. An added benefit is that multisensory techniques are super motivating and engaging to children. They love being able to feel the letters, make the letters, and hold objects that connect with those letters and initial sounds. The resources for these multi-sensory activities provide needed scaffolding for beginning and struggling readers and include visual and tactile supports to enhance learning and memory.
