I teach in a urban school setting in Washington DC. My students are attending what is known as a big picture school, we are one of 75 schools world wide to follow this model. The idea at this school is that we take students who might not succeed in a traditional school setting and we provide them with internships in fields they are interested in to help them be motivated to complete their academics, go to college, and pursue the goals they have set through their internship experiences. Many of our students have been put out of more traditional high schools because they don't do well with the traditional model of sitting and listening to the teacher all day every day. Here we participate in normal academics in the morning, electives in the afternoon 2 days a week, and then the students participate in their internships in the afternoon the other 3 days of the week. These internships range from working at a hair dressers, a bakery, a leasing office, or even with local artists.
