Can you remember the dullness and boredom of having to sit in the same chair all day, every day throughout your school days? Wanting to wiggle, move, or sprawl out? Wishing there was even the slightest bit of cushion instead of the cold, hard seat below you. Unfortunately that is still a struggle for students today, which is why I’d love to fully convert my classroom to a comfortable place for students to learn and grow through the use of flexible seating. Since taking the leap and switching half of my classroom to flexible seating last year, I have noticed a huge difference in some of my students' performance and behavior. Students who weren’t able to sit still long enough to complete even a short activity in second grade, were able to complete multiple activities utilizing the flexible seating options in my room. As a result, it has been so amazing to see their happiness and confidence skyrocket With only converting about half of my room to flexible seating (yoga balls, homemade benches, homemade crate seats, pillows on the carpet) there weren’t always enough options for all 28 students to pick a seat where they felt comfortable and focused enough to do their best when completing their work. I would love to be able to add some more options for my more wiggly friends like wiggle seats and stools where they can kick their legs and move so that even more students can gain these benefits. I always pride myself on working really hard to make our classroom feel like a family, especially for my students with trauma, and upgrading our seating will help it feel more like a home.
