Our eighth grade ELA curriculum includes a Holocaust unit in which we read the adapted play "The Diary of Anne Frank". The Holocaust and WWII are highly engaging and students willingly indulge. I would like to delve further into the Holocaust with my eighth graders and include a historical fiction novel. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a vehicle which will capture students, build additional Holocaust context, and facilitate critical thinking skills. It will provide the perfect extension to our unit using a highly acclaimed piece of literature. Additionally, reading novels build reading endurance, and a captivating piece such as The Boy in the Striped Pajamas will ensure success.
