Students with special needs can benefit from a variety of classroom accommodations. Flexible seating is one example of an accommodation that can assist our students in accessing their curriculum without altering the subject matter. We manipulate the work environment, not the curriculum. Flexible seating provides a variety of seating options for students with special needs to complete their assigned tasks. When students are expected to complete classroom tasks via the traditional desk and chair, many are easily distracted and unable to complete their work. Flexible seating options can provide a safe, comfortable space for special needs students to access their curriculum. When students have different seating options they will often take ownership of their learning. Many will have fewer distractions as they choose where to sit. Students tend to be more engaged because they lose their seat if they're not productive.
