Through the course of the school year the students in our Advanced Placement Physics 1 course study classic Newtonian physics. They are exposed to energy laws, motion of cars and particles and the properties of light and electricity. I want to take our AP Physics students to a local amusement park to apply the principals of motion they learned in class to the amusement park rides. After the AP exam in early May the AP students still have approximately 3-4 weeks of the school year left. My students will examine acceleration vs. time data from the motion of roller coasters. The project they would be working on is differentiated based on the math class they are in. Students will partner up and examine the motion of a specific ride that best matches the math and AP physics concepts they have been exposed to this year. My project will have students use free apps on their cell phones to collect the data. Students will then spend the final weeks of the school year analyzing their data.
