Our theatre department is brand new to our school! As I developed the curriculum, it was important for me to have solid examples of theatre literature for students to analyze and act out. When I decided which play to focus on, I had two requirements: that the text be strongly written and that the text reflects the culture of our African-American student body. August Wilson's The Piano Lesson fits both of these requirements remarkably. The Piano Lesson won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and has been since considered one of the most influential plays of the 20th century. In addition, African-American literature is frequently scarce in many curriculum plans. It is important for me to create educational experiences in which my students can feel empowered and inspired by an playwright who shares their cultural experiences.
