Working in a low income school can mean many different things. It means low attendance at times, students being distracted by outside factors I can't control and not always having the supplies we need. This is especially true during out Read Aloud and Silent Reading time. My students love their reading time and often can't wait to get on the carpet to indulge in a good book. There are many times that I'd like to do certain activities while reading, but we are limited because my students can't bring their papers to the carpet. They have nothing to write on. Students often have to go back to their seats and directions and information get lost in translation. This is especially true while reading informational text. I'd like to be able to do more research with them in front of the Smart Board and many of them items would make it possible. There are many other items that will benefit my student's learning tremendously. My class is made up of 24 students of all different needs. This includes Special Education students, many ELL students and also students who need more of a challenge. In order to serve them all to the best of my ability, I need more resources for individualized instruction. Many of my Special Education students have difficulty on the carpet or during Silent Reading due to fidgeting on the floor or in their seats. In the past, when they have used Flexible Seating options, this changed drastically. However, I currently do not have enough to cover every Special Student in the room.
