Rhythms and other musical concepts must be experienced, not just talked about, in order to be truly understood. Therefore, I would like to start a trash can drum ensemble in my music appreciation classes so that students can practice the concepts we discuss in class and use them to create their own compositions. More durable and safe, and lots cheaper than a full classroom set of drums, we can use the cans to perform in class, at school assemblies, or even at other district or community performance venues. In addition to grooving to rhythms, we will use the cans to learn about instrumentation, improvisation, playing style and technique, timbre, form, meter, composing and creating, rehearsal and performance practices, and much more! Music is something that must be experienced, not just talked about, and this project will provide countless opportunities for my students to experience the concepts we discuss in class, create and compose their own pieces, express themselves musically, and have fun along the way! The possibilities with these cans are endless, and having instruments to play as part of my music appreciation curriculum would truly be invaluable. As Benjamin Franklin once said: "Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn," and these cans are a great way to involve my students in a very unique musical experience!
