My students are seventh and eighth graders in a middle school. Many are second language learners who are very reluctant to speak in front of their peers on a formal basis. We are in a district with a very large Hispanic population and many students have never had the opportunity to do any public speaking. Oral speaking is an important part of our state standards. I would like to focus on this skill, because most teachers do much of the talking in the classroom with little participation by the students. I would also like my students to be able to view themselves in oral speaking activities so that they can improve their weaknesses.
