Students need to read stories that reflect their life experiences like a mirror, give them a view of a new world like a window, and let them cross between the two like a bridge. Stories like this help students build empathy -- but it can be really hard to find the kind of high quality literature that students need. Angie Thomas' award-winning novel The Hate U Give does all of this and more. I can't keep copies on my shelf! Through this project, all of my students will have the opportunity to read this gripping story together, heightening their engagement as they grapple with some of the most important issues facing young Americans today.
