A reality of my school is that a high percentage of students are not proficient readers. Another reality is that budget constraints means that alternate texts and materials of high interest/low level have had to be pushed back into secondary purchasing. This grant will begin to fund a new core collection of alternate texts and materials to support struggling and reluctant readers. Struggling and reluctant readers need different reading materials than proficient students to find success as they progress toward proficiency. The materials chosen for this grant are specifically chosen for their high interest to students and their alternate methods for introducing students to high quality literature. These alternate texts include both titles taught in classrooms and books intended for self-selection in the library. Specifically included in the list are graphic novel versions of classroom texts such as “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “Homer’s Odyssey”. Graphic versions combine the original text of the book with images that provide contextual clues that aid in understanding. In addition to the classroom texts, self-selection books have been included. These include graphic novels such as “V for Vendetta” and “American Gods”. These titles have been included because the content and vocabulary are at 10th to 12th grade levels but are presented in a manner that is accessible by struggling and reluctant readers. The end result of these materials is that our population of struggling and reluctant readers will have a drastically improved access to alternate texts and this will directly lead to improved scores in reading and literacy proficiency.
