Students with special needs often require the use of assistive technology to support their aquisition of the underlying fine motor, visual-motor, and bilateral motor coordination skills to acquire age appropriate handwriting or typing skills to access their curriculums. Research supports the use of multi-sensory media to stimulate various senses and parts of the brain to support acquisition of these skills. Technology provides educators with a variety of unique and stimulating ways to support our students’ multiple needs. Applications such as “SnapType” are examples of ways an iPad and stylus can be used to provide a modified way for a student to maintain or gain independence with participation in a general education classroom experience.
