Am I the only teacher who begs the janitor to bring me pencils he finds on the ground? By the end of the year, only our copy paper stolen from the staff room and some nubby pencils remain. With $1.06 to spend on each student for the entire year, resources are sparse as a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. We have rocked the pencil and paper for a long time, but are ready to break free into new worlds of clay and paint! Oh, to watch the students hard at work when they do get clay in their hands—a rare hush falls over the room, as they are deep in play. “Do not keep children to their studies by compulsion but by play.” -Plato (My favorite philosopher because his name sounds like Play-Doh)
