My students are fifth graders who are happy to come to school and still like to learn. They value time for "Read to Self," because they know they can relax and enjoy a book of their choosing. They get excited to be in the "A Club", have spelling bees, play vocabulary games, partake in writer's workshop, and still be kids. They attend a public school, and are faced with so many challenges in their home lives. The death of a classmate this year from a stray bullet brings to reality the gravity of what they face: unsafe neighborhoods, frequent relocation, lack of parental involvement, and so much more. And yet they still deserve the best education they can, especially in an effort to break the cycle of their community's debilitating ways.
