By providing a copy of the novel for each student in the classroom, they can read along as we read it aloud or read independently as needed. I use these novels as "jumping off points" to look at geography, government, cultures, social issues, and literacy lessons. I have planned items to do with each novel but also allow the students to ask questions and do investigations on things that spur interest in them from the novels. Students do projects, presentations and work together to learn about themselves and others. I love to see the excitement when my students connect with a character or culture in one of the novels we read.
