My kindergarten students would benefit greatly from having a large rug in our classroom. It would serve as a place to sit comfortably and work independently or with others. It would be used in our meeting area where we work on social skills and come together as a classroom community. The rug would help these first time learners by providing them a marked space that is their own, but still community. Without a rug, the kids struggle to stay in one spot on the floor and bother others because they are too close. In addition, they can also be too far away if they are trying to find a comfortable space. This makes it difficult for them to see the book we are reading, the activity we are doing on the board, or on chart paper. Having a large rug would be a classroom management tool that would solve many of the issues we face when trying to sit and learn together. It would give everyone a spot of their own and minimize distractions to allow all the students to focus on their learning. It will build a place where music, oral language, social skills, personal well being (through fitness) and many other topics can and will be taught daily.
