Recess is a vital and necessary part of our children's education. On April 14, 2018, Senate Bill 1083 was passed requiring all schools K-5 provide 2 recess periods per day. Our school has always provided 3 recesses even before a bill was passed! We recognize how important recess time is for our students. Research shows that recess time is important for more than just physical exercise! The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children participate in 60 minutes of “moderate to vigorous activity per day,” and suggested that recess be part of that. “Recess is a necessary break in the day for optimizing a child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development,” the AAP wrote in a 2013 policy statement. “In essence, recess should be considered a child’s personal time, and it should not be withheld for academic or punitive reasons.” While we have great recess time with a great playground, our students are lacking any sports related activities which many of our students express interest in! We believe having basketball goals and basketballs will help with their coordination and strength as well as their cognitive and emotional growth!
