I am at a school that is 85% Hispanic and 89% low socio-economic receiving free and reduced lunch. I also teach the EL's and have a class in which half of the class only speaks Spanish. This has drastically changed my approach to teaching science. The best change and impact I have on those students has actually been the hardest shift virtually. I rely on students working in groups and with hands on experiments in order to bridge the language gap and inspire students into thinking like a scientist. Since hands on is not an option, I have been able to find and create virtual labs and simulations to increase student engagement. The struggle has been group work. I can successfully open 3 meets on one computer without the computer kicking me out of the meets or causing the computer to slow and overload. Having this extra computer will allow me to group students by language fluency, open up a separate meet for them, and let them collaborate on assignments and virtual labs. This computer is essential for my students to be able to work together successfully.
