As part of our year’s theme exploring the purpose and value of narrative, my students will be exploring different modes of storytelling through critical lenses. To dive into the way storytelling helps shape our identities, my students will be reading and listening to the audio of the award-winning novels “The Hate U Give” and “Because You’ll Never Meet Me”. In these units, my students will be using these texts and audio CDs to analyze theme, story development, and how the narrative process can help uncover different parts of our identities. The students will participate in Literature Analysis Circles as formative work for their Untold Story narrative assignments and literature analysis pieces. These novels are quality, culturally conscious texts that will inspire my students to be creative in the way they think about and tell their own stories, exemplifying dreaming big despite limiting circumstances. The audio CDs of these novels will also help many of my students with visual processing needs, to access this text meaningfully, allowing all of my students to explore these relevant, modern texts. Please help my students tap into their creativity and dream big by providing us with these texts and audio CDs.
