My library mainly consists of older books that were generously donated to me when I began teaching. I’d like to expand my classroom library so that it’s more diverse, more representative of my classroom of students. My goal is that every student can find a character in a book in our classroom they feel is representative of themselves. However, I also want them to have a variety of literature at their finger tips that will help them learn about other cultures and become more informed, accepting, and understanding individuals. With these additional reading materials, students will have more choice in what books they are choosing to immerse themselves in when practicing new reading strategies. Some of the titles on the list are books that I use as mentor texts every year, but only have PDF copies of the words. I would love to be able to have hard copies of these texts so I can use the illustrations to support student learning and thinking. Additionally, many of the chapter books on the list are on the 2018-2019 Mark Twain Book Award list. Fourth and Fifth graders who read these books and complete a book project attend a celebration of their hard work in April and will get a chance to meet Rob Buyea, author of Because of Mr. Terupt. These titles are quickly checked out from our school library so having additional copies in the classroom would be extremely helpful as about half my students are participating in this reading program.
