About my class

Our school has been primarily based off of virtual learning; however, recently we have moved towards implementing small-group instruction in conjunction with virtual learning. Classrooms at our school do not contain printers, computers, white boards, and additional supplies unless provided by the staff. Through the decodable readers, a printer, and additional supplies being sought through this grant, I will be able to better implement the new curriculum called Wit & Wisdom for my beginning readers. My students are non-readers. The Wit & Wisdom curriculum provides a wealth of multi-cultural literature with a focus on science and social studies; however, it does not supply leveled texts to teach young children to read. My students are in desperate need of exposure to reading books at their instructional levels. Kindergarten and first grade are the foundational years for developing the reading skills necessary to become confident and successful readers that transcends throughout their lives. Decodable readers provide students with the basic foundations of phonics within a specific scope and sequenced format. The requested readers that follow will support my students' needs: Lakeshore Word Family Readers; First Little Readers - Level C; and Lakeshore Nonfiction Emergent Readers. Several of these readers will support science and social studies concepts, as well, to continue the philosophy of promoting literacy across the curriculum. "Literacy, no child left behind" will be supported by the use of printable decodable books.
