I teach in a Self-contained Special Education unit for kids who struggle with Emotional Disorders. Every other week, we have a Fun Friday in class where those students who have met their behavior goals get to play games, have treats or do other fun activities. Unfortunately, my cupboard has been pretty bare this year and there is little to motivate them with. I want to be able motivate and reward these amazing kids for accomplishing their behavior goals! I have seen how much harder they have to work at being successful in school than most kids their age and oftentimes verbal praise falls short. Having high interest items and activities to reward my students with has been the most successful way I have found to motivate them each day. This project will provide my kids with some fun activities like Corn Hole, board and card games (Battleship, Codenames, Mexican Train Dominos, Uno and Bounce Off), water color paints, kinetic sand, facials and nail painting (yes, the boys like to do this too!). They will have access to these rewards if they have met their behavior goals for the 2 weeks leading up to Fun Friday! It will also give them a kickboxing stand they can use to release any built up tension from the week. Having appropriate behavior takes a lot of energy and focus for my students and sometimes the best reward for them is to get it out with something physical. The last item this project will provide for our classroom is a popcorn machine so that we can have an easy and inexpensive treat to reward them with during our Fun Fridays. Thank you for your help in motivating my students to greater success!
