I have learned that my students do better with their academic explanations if they are allowed to write on flat, open spaces. For the most part, students use whiteboard markers and do their work on their desks, as opposed to paper and pencil. They are able to see their work, use different colors to differentiate, and have a wider space to explain their thinking to others. Each day students work in small groups with the teacher to reinforce the material learned in class. This whiteboard table allows for more efficient use of our space, more visibility as they explain their thinking, more room to work as they process through a problem. They are easy to maintain and cut down significantly on the scrap paper used in my room.
