Students in my classroom start each class period by reading from novels of their own choice. After reading independently, we have whole class lessons on specific reading skills. I often use these lessons to introduce students to more classic pieces of literature. Then I ask students to go back to their independent reading novels and practice the skills that were introduced during whole-class instruction. This process has significantly increased student motivation and participation, but it is only effective if they have a variety of novels to choose from for their independent reading. My goal is to continue building a classroom library where every student can find a book they enjoy and relate to.
