Idaho state-mandated and district testing are completed on computers. Students are required to take these long, high-stakes tests three times a year, and once a month to monitor progress. These tests include (but are not limited to) our district-wide math progress monitoring and diagnostic tests and statewide monthly reading tests. Imagine 25 students listening to their test at the same time, without headphones. YIKES, it would be chaos! Students need headphones to limit distractions, watch instructional videos, and work at their own pace on their computer while completing testing. The use of headphones also helps discourage talking among students, which greatly helps chatty first graders (remember, buzzing with learning). Additionally, our classroom does not currently have any headphones because we are a new school, and we do not have a PTO established yet to help fund these headphones, so these are absolutely essential tools for our independent learning time!
