Let's face it, kids move a lot, and they should! The "sit still, stop wiggling" message a lot of us grew up with made it challenging for many to focus on our learning. In the last year, I have started to work flexible seating into our room. Every day students are able to enjoy a space that is all theirs in our classroom. It challenges them to make a responsible, honest choice about where they will be able to meet their personal needs and do their best work. Students are able to be on the floor, with stools, regular chairs, box seats, or on a couch that a fellow teacher was kind enough to pass on to us. While we have some options going already, they are all passive. My goal with this project is to give my students seating options that are active, like wobble seats and chair bands. These flexible seating options will allow students to integrate more movement into their learning each day.
