My students have faced incredible hardships even before the pandemic hit. Many of them didn't feel comfortable in their learning spaces, weren't given the space to process emotions, or feel their feelings. I want to create a space in my classroom they can go to process, refocus, reset, and come back ready to learn with materials like warm lighting instead of harsh fluorescents and activities to refocus their minds. Students thrive when they have a space they can go to calm down, process emotions, take a brain break, and refocus. I want to make sure I create that space for them, especially coming back from the pandemic this year. Not only am I hoping to use this space as a safe, quiet, and reflective space, I also want to utilize it to motivate students to come during their breaks to do homework, get tutoring, or just utilize the space to chill and reset before their next class. I have seen these students thrive in having a space like this when I previously taught them. It allowed them to regulate their emotions, process events happening outside of school, and gave them a space they felt confident to be themselves. I am excited to be able to give them another space like this within my new classroom and am hoping to partner with you in providing these students a safe space.
