My students struggle with reading. They struggle with connecting to characters, events, and a themes in a story. In my class I create very meaningful discussions after reading a few paragraphs at a time. Our reading series is...well, blah. I try to spice up reading in my room, and like to introduce fun readings that will get the students excited. I currently have one classroom set of the novel Maniac Magee and I read it in depth with my students every year.
Seeing my students excitement for Maniac Magee, seeing them not want to put the book down, and seeing them beg to read more, has inspired me to request novels like Island of the Blue Dolphins and two other classroom novels. I can remember reading novels when I was in elementary school. I can remember being so excited to be in reading class again. I can remember feeling as if I was the character in the story. I want that for my students! I want more options than only Maniac Magee in my classroom. I want my students to create a love for reading.
