Dramatic play is more than pretend food and cooking utensils. Students are currently playing in a classroom that is "under construction." This is my first year teaching in a pre-k classroom and I have minimal materials for ages 3-5. I want my students to learn about their community, role play different careers and situations, and experience items that they will use as adults. The career costumes will allow students to express themselves. The baby dolls will help students to develop compassion and empathy. The phone will help students with speech and language development. Also, the cash register will be the perfect addition when I transform the dramatic play area into different themes, such as a pumpkin patch or farmer's market. Overall, students will improve social skills and increase self-esteem!
