Our school curriculum, written by the teachers on staff, is based on the Next Generation Science Standards being integrated with all the other subjects. We are based on the inquiry/project based philosophy. The students are actively engaged in solving problems we give them going through the engineering process. They need to have multiple manipulatives to try out their group’s idea, build, and test it (marble runs, train tracks, plastic building pieces, etc.). Having different types of flexible seating in the classroom will allow their brain to still be active, while they need to be at a table or desk, recording what they have learned in their science journals. They also need chairs that allow them to wiggle while they read. Sitting still is very hard when you are 5 and 6, and trying to learn to read. Most students need to move around, while using a lot of brain power to read. Research has proven this to be true – moving alerts the brain to be engaged and ready to store the information that is coming in, and create new dendrites to form for more learning to happen. Classrooms need to become a more active environment, with a lot of student interaction. This is a difficult goal when children are sitting in uncomfortable chairs while doing paperwork. I strive to create an exciting environment where children enjoy learning and solving problems. By providing the materials listed below, I believe I can enrich the educational experience of my students and better serve them as an educator.
