The books included in this list are the 2018-2019 Volunteer State Book Award (VSBA) winners. These materials will promote literacy, vocabulary building, and writing. Books such as "Step Right Up: How Doc and Jim Key Taught the Word about Kindness" will promote kindness, which is one of our school character traits highlighted during the year. "Ada Twist, Scientist" will give a positive message to girls that their dreams do not have to be limited. "At the Marsh in the Meadow" will provide a tie in across the curriculum with science topics. The titles in this selection provide a variety of topics to appeal to the many preferences and reading levels of my students, with characters that are as diverse as they are. My goal is to promote reading and encourage students to set personal reading goals for themselves. Some of these goals may include reading their 9 week goals set with their home base teacher, earn awards for reading a required number of VSBA books, and to develop a love of reading.
