During the scope of their upper division field ecology in high school, students will investigate different ecological zones and create proposals on how to prevent coastal erosion, how to save coral reef, how to collect and prevent pollution etc.. Through microscopic data taken from sand analysis, water samples, and other abiotic and biotic factor, they will gain a better understanding of what they are studying and how to create feasible solutions. I would love to see my students make connections between the things they see and the microscopic organisms/abiotic factors that contribute to ecological issues. They will have the opportunity to use what they learned to apply it and help the island of Maui.
