Three years ago, our grade-level received 8 chickens that were donated to us. Our second graders researched and learned as much as they could. They became chicken "egg"sperts! They came up with the design of the chicken coop where our chickens currently live and had a hand-on building it along with many other people from our community. Fast forward two years and many hands-on learning experiences later, our hens are getting old and many of them are no longer laying. We count on the money we get from their eggs to help us pay for chicken feed, bedding, and cleaning supplies. We quickly realized that we needed to get some new life in our coop. This year our second graders will get to experience the miracle of life first hand! They have been a part of every decision that has been made down to what type of chickens we will hatch. The eggs have been donated and soon, we will begin incubating! But we need some supplies! We are in need of an egg candler and scale to make sure our eggs are developing during incubation. We also need heating lamps, bulbs, feeders and waters, and chick starter feed for after the chicks hatch to put in our brooders. Finally we will need a crate and pen to put the chicks in when it comes time to try and integrate them into our already established flock. Our students are unbelievably excited and can’t wait to get started.
