The Academy on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) recommends that 90% of foreign language class time be in the target language. The language heard and seen in the classroom should be comprehensible. Having an FVR library is one way to make a 90% comprehensible classroom possible. By reading these books, that have been written by teaching professionals using a variety of cognates and words introduced in class, students will grow in their understanding of the top 200 Spanish words and the top 16 verb structures. The readers are written by teachers who understand the need for 90% comprehension and have written these books to complement a total comprehension curriculum. My students are avid readers and will be using these books on a daily basis to help them improve their Spanish skills. By offering it to them daily, with no reading logs or response journals required, students will receive access to the most efficient possible means of vocabulary acquisition, spelling improvement, and gaining stronger writing skills. Since it is based on choice, it is inherently differentiated by interest and by level of difficulty. I will be working with them to find the appropriate level text and building strong reading habits. Along with Spanish language readers I have also included a few higher level books that are read frequently by my students in English. My hope is that this reaches and helps my few native speakers grow in their language abilities as well as push all students when they are in need of a challenge.
