My students are not active readers. In using new novels meshed with some classics, it encourages students to read and explore other books. The novel, Bruiser, is one that I believe can get my students interested in reading. It appeals to both the boys and the girls in the classroom. For boys, it shows similar protective instincts they might have for their sister or family member. For a girl, it gives them some romance and satisfies the need "to help" or "to fix" something that is hurting someone they care about. It is a mystery that will keep them engaged and guessing what is going to happen next. As a teacher, this is something that is priceless.
